Delivery guide – what to cover

Use this as your session plan before you start. Every PER area below must be covered each quarter – you will tick each topic off later in this form. The pool plant refresher at the end is an optional extra if time allows.
1. Legislation & procedures — legislation, company policies and consequences, Pool Safety Operating Procedures (PSOP – NOP & EAP), risk assessment, and swimming pool hazards.
2. CPR — primary survey (DR<C>ABC), adult sudden collapse CPR, adult drowning CPR, CPR with more than one rescuer, pocket masks and face shields, problems with resuscitation, when to stop CPR, and use of a training AED (STA recommends an AED in every session).
3. First aid – choking — choking management for adult, child and infant casualties.
4. Pool rescue skills (in-water practical) — types of rescue, water entries, casualty recognition, poolside rescues, in-water rescues, non-contact and contact tows, unconscious casualty rescue, team lift, safe exits, and incident management.
Optional: pool plant refresher — backwashing, dosing systems, PPE, chemical storage & COSHH, and plant room emergency shutdown.
STA guidance: include a ‘real life’ scenario and site-specific content in every session, with rescuers demonstrating skills in their normal work clothing.
